Led by Dr. Shailesh Dass, a visiting expert from Brisbane, Australia, you’ll gain advanced skills tailored to emergency medicine professionals.
This course focuses on developing the skills required to use ultrasound for guiding nerve blocks in emergency settings. Participants will gain hands-on experience using ultrasound to visualise nerves, spaces, and planes, optimise imaging techniques, and perform nerve blocks safely and effectively.
With a strong emphasis on ultrasound guidance, participants will practice needle tip visualisation on purpose-built phantoms and learn to integrate these techniques into their clinical practice. Faculty will provide real-world insights and practical tips to enhance confidence and competence in delivering multimodal analgesia.
Through real-world scenarios and case discussions, participants will learn to integrate ultrasound-guided nerve blocks into their clinical practice for effective pain management and procedural anaesthesia.
Day 1:
- Fundamentals of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
- Upper limb blocks: suprascapular, axillary, elbow, and wrist.
- Lower limb blocks: PENG, fascia iliaca, femoral nerve, saphenous nerve, popliteal sciatic nerve, posterior tibial nerve, and ankle blocks.
- Orofacial blocks.
- Case-based discussions and real-world applications.
Day 2:
- Advanced axial blocks: superficial cervical plexus, interscalene, and supraclavicular blocks.
- Truncal blocks: transversus abdominis plane (TAP), rectus sheath, and erector spinae blocks.
- Thoracic blocks: serratus anterior and other regional techniques.
- Practical applications of truncal and plane blocks.
- Case-based discussions and real-world applications.

Dr. Dass is a Senior Staff Specialist and Clinical Lead in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) at Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department in Brisbane, Australia. With nearly two decades of PoCUS expertise, he has been at the forefront of advancing ultrasound applications in emergency medicine since 2004.
Dr. Dass holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinician-Performed Ultrasound from the University of Otago (2012) and has completed multiple CCPU units through ASUM since 2015. He specialises in ultrasound-guided procedures, particularly nerve blocks and regional anaesthesia, to provide safe and effective pain management for emergency department patients.
As an Emergency Medicine Clinician Lead at the Australian Institute of Ultrasound (AIU), Dr. Dass shares his passion for PoCUS by training clinicians worldwide in bedside diagnostics, procedures, and pain management. He also co-leads the ACEM-accredited Special Skills in Ultrasound program at Redcliffe Emergency Department, a six-month term designed to train the next generation of emergency physicians.

Prerequisites
Qualification:
This course is designed for medical and allied health professionals with an interest in using ultrasound for pain management and procedural anaesthesia in emergency settings.
Prior Learning:
Participants should have prior experience and be comfortable with foundational ultrasound techniques.
Regular access to an ultrasound machine and patients is strongly recommended for consolidating skills before and after the course.
Pre-Course Requirements:
Participants will receive pre-course material (videos and a quiz) four weeks before the start date. This content is mandatory and forms the foundation for the in-person training.
